Matthew Waugh
Rugby has taken Matt on a journey across both codes and 3 continents and he definitely has the most diverse rugby experience of our 5 short listed players.
His first love was rugby league and he played this code in Australia until the age of 12 when he moved to Hong Kong due to parental work commitments. As rugby union is more prevalent than league in Hong Kong he began playing and only 1 year later found himself representing Hong Kong at U14 level and then went onto their U16’s 18’s and 20’s.
After a brief spell in the UK, London, Matt decided to move back home to Australia and take on a place with Gordons RFC in Sydney where he was named vice captain and played for them in Australia’s premier colt competition. After completion of his colts year Matt gained a place at the University of Technology in Sydney and as he needed to support his own learning he searched for a rugby scholarship. He managed to get a scholarship but he needed to switch codes once again to league.
Matt still has a desire to play rugby union but at the moment he is gaining fantastic support and honours as a league player. Since he changed codes he has been selected for New South Wales University for the Interstate match against Queensland, which NSW won 14-4. After impressing in this match he was selected to represent Australia Universities in the upcoming world cup in England.

Matt still has a passion for rugby union and has ambitions to become a professional player. He feels that selection for the Coach Logic Scholarship will prepare him to make a big impact on his return and give him the best chance of reaching his future goals.
“I have a great desire to return to the union stage with a goal of being signed in the Japanese top league through my Hong Kong residency in the future. This opportunity at Inside Running academy I feel would be both deserved and vital to my rugby return as I would be again diving into the world of rugby.”
Matt along with the other 5 candidates on the short list have been given the final task of completing a short video to show why they should win the Coach Logic Rugby Scholarship 2013. We will be uploading these videos to our YouTube Channel next Thursday evening and tomorrow night we will be profiling Sam Harrison, who has more than one reason for being selected! Find out what this could be by staying tuned to our social media channels for all our future announcements.
