Burhan Torgut

Burhan currently plays international rugby at scrum half for Cyprus who hold the world record for most number of consecutive wins. Cyprus overtook New Zealand with 18 consecutive wins when they beat Bulgaria on the 16th March 2013. He is currently studying at Cardiff Metropolitan University (UWIC) and recently collected the ‘Fresher of the year’ award.

Burhan’s favourite rugby moment caught our eye and showed off his desire to maximise his potential.

“At the time I was 14, it was my first season of club rugby at Moseley RFC, and luckily we had got into a cup final, previous to this I had been selected in every single cup game before hand. As the coach named the squad for the final, my name was not mentioned within the match day 22. This tore me to pieces, but I took in how this moment had made me feel and inspired me never to feel like that again, so the final came and we had won it, and I enjoyed the occasion as if I had played the game myself. After the game I went home and decided I would become an even better player so that the coaches would not have a reason to drop me ever again. Low and behold, the next season we had reached the cup final again, and this time I was involved in the squad due to all the hard work I had put in.”

Burhan has represented his various regions throughout the age groups and has also represented England Colleges. Before going to University he was involved with the Worcester Warriors Academy and he now currently plays for both UWIC and Rhiwbina RFC.

He says his game is based around “quick and quality delivery to the back while controlling, organizing and using the forwards correctly to make sure the team functions together”. Burhan cannot imagine life outside rugby and either wants to make it as a professional player or be involved as a coach or video analyst. He feels the Coach Logic scholarship will go a long way to helping him achieve his objectives.

Burhan along with the other 5 candidates on the short list have been given the final task of completing a short video to show why they should win the Coach Logic Rugby Scholarship 2013. We will be uploading these videos to our YouTube Channel next Thursday evening and tomorrow night we will be profiling Hong Kong 7s internationalist Matt Waugh . Stay tuned to our social media channels for all our future announcements.
